It&#8217;s not that easy to bring the passionate baker with\nhis baked goods and the oriental-looking bakery to an expressive photo. When I\nlook at the results later, I am almost disappointed &#8211; somehow this pictrue does\nnot capture reality adequately.<br>\nBut wait, I have to start all over again, how come I&#8217;m standing here in\nMedellin with a baker who wanted to become a doctor and take pictures of him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_171326-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-129\" width=\"288\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_171326-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_171326-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_171326-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_171326-34x60.jpg 34w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During my research on microcredits I came across the website\nKiva.org<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>,\nwhere people can directly give other people a loan (starting at 25 US dollars).\nWhoever gives a loan can find out about the borrower, his plans and ideas, but\nalso about the risk of not getting the loan back. But of course the loans are\nnot transferred directly from the lender to the borrower, in between there is\nan organization that mediates the loan. In the case of Colombia, and in\nparticular Medellin, Interactuar is the largest lender. Interactuar organises credits\ngiven through the page kiva.org, but also lends other funds, a complicated\nsystem. Through this research, I came across Andres Felipe Ramirez Moncada of\nInteractuar, who put me in contact with Juan. And who exactly is Juan again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/360_0311-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/360_0311-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/360_0311-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/360_0311-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/360_0311-120x60.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>SAMSUNG<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Juan is in his mid-thirties, has no children, but his own\nbakery, a great success. But the reality, Juan&#8217;s reality, looks like this: As a\nyoung man he wanted to study medicine and become a doctor. But that&#8217;s not so\neasy in Colombia, there are only a few public universities and the private ones\nare expensive. Juan&#8217;s family couldn&#8217;t afford that. So he first worked &#8211; because\nthere is no dual education system in Colombia like in Germany, where you partly\ngo to school and partly work in a company and get some money for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, however, Juan no longer just wanted to be\nemployed as an unskilled worker. He wanted to start his own business and have\nhis own bakery. So he started to bake cookies in his home kitchen, smuggled\nthem into the company and sold them to his colleagues. They were so\nenthusiastic that the orders could soon no longer be handled with the normal\noven. And so Juan turned to the microcredit organisation Interactuar and took\nthe courageous step of becoming a baker. To do so, he first attended courses\nthat Interactuar offered and that he paid for himself. &#8220;I learned\neverything there in various courses. Baking bread and rolls, making cakes and biscuits,\nbut also writing bills and the whole bookkeeping. I could do almost nothing\nbefore, but the courses were very good and not so expensive,&#8221; says the\nentrepreneur. For three years, he attended various courses every now and then\nuntil he was finally able to open his first bakery. For this he applied for a\nloan from Interactuar, which was approved. Today he has moved to this new\nlocation with the oriental decoration and has opened another bakery, in these\ntwo shops he employs a total of five people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_165902-2-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-138\" width=\"288\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_165902-2-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_165902-2-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_165902-2-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fairtradeajourney.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190301_165902-2-34x60.jpg 34w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, of course, we are curious and want to try his favourite\npastry. &#8220;So I recommend the biscuit roll, of which I am particularly\nproud. And also the bunuelos, which are corn cheese balls, a typical pastry\nhere in Colombia.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we enjoy the delicacies, we want to know what he plans\nnext, what he is dreaming of. &#8220;I would love to travel to different\ncountries and learn everywhere how to bake bread there. In Germany you have\ncompletely different bread from the one we have, to learn more about that would\nbe of great interest for me. But probably I will never be able to afford it,\neven if I can live well with the money I earn from the bakery and even support\nmy mother. Besides, I can&#8217;t take any time off, I&#8217;m at the bakery every day. But\nI also have another dream: to have my own castle one day &#8211; a castle made of flour,\nmy Castillo de harina&#8221;. Then he shows us his great smile again and it\u2019s very\nclear: He\u2019s gonna build this castle.
